Gamila is a gourmet beverages brand, originally created by Designbox. What or who is Designbox? A firm owned by Aly and Beth Khalifa, Designbox is a staff of designers and engineers who happen to love coffee and tea…it’s a match made in heaven!
As a global innovation house, the Designbox team develops consumer products, launches brands, strategizes manufacturing, and invents technologies, and has been at it since 1995. Designbox works with clients around the world (and in their own back yard) to turn great ideas into real, impactful products, brands and experiences.
Designbox first ventured into gourmet beverages and created Gamila in 2001 with the award winning, commercially successful product, The Teastick. The Impress Coffee Brewer was launched in 2012 with an extremely successful Kickstarter campaign. The mission for the Gamila product line is to bring future-classic design and functionality to single serve gourmet beverage tools. Both coffee and tea makers have years of history and craftsmanship in creating a beautiful beverage. Gamila adds modern simplicity and elegance without disrupting the ritual of the beverage creation.
The Gamila (and Designbox) overarching design philosophy is firmly rooted within a mission of sustainability. Both The Teastick and the Impress Brewer take waste out of the process, eliminating paper teabags, filters or plastic pods and leaving only the tea leaves or grounds themselves to easily compost after use. Gamila products are designed for single service, so there is not wasted excess made, and the taste is specific to the flavor preferences of the maker rather than compromised by sitting in a big pot for hours.
Gamila is now owned by Seventh Generation Ventures.
In July, 2014, Gamila announced its acquisition by sustainability heroes, Seventh Generation Ventures (an initiative by Seventh Generation, Inc).

Seventh Generation Ventures was created to enable other mission-based brands to leverage the infrastructure of Seventh Generation to accelerate growth. Seventh Generation Ventures recently located their offices in the Raleigh Warehouse District just a couple of blocks from Gamila’s own.
“Gamila’s product line was inspired by and supported by our local community.” Aly mentioned. “From the customers that visit us at Designbox to the local coffee roasters who have helped us perfect our product, we have been able to directly apply design innovation from their insights. Having our company become even more deeply embedded in the local business fabric is terrific and opens the door to a host of new product opportunities.”
Along with the purchase of Gamila, Designbox will work closely with Seventh Generation to further explore and develop portable beverage filtration in a host of unique ways. Seventh Generation’s bobble® brand of water filtration products will now be complemented by the Gamila collection, with Designbox adding design strategy and innovation for the product lines and goals.
